"Education" as they call it!
On the brink of completing my semester 3 of Bachelor's Major in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering at FCRIT, Vashi (Univ. of Mumbai), I know a lot about what it is to be a part of this kind of educational courses (and believe me, it hasn't always been yippee-kind-of!).
As a student, a few things educational system I've learnt so far:
1) Overall, and on a long-term, open-minded basis, it largely sucks!
2) It's monotonously boring, mostly; I doubt whether it can bring the best out of an aspiring engineer's mind/brains (which continues to become rather sluggish by the passing standard/grade/semester!).
3) The course seems crappy, as what we study is largely outdated. (Some parts of the "syllabus", as they call it, does sometimes have an icing of some MODERN things added in that field, but the cake is rotten beneath, so it doen't really matter that way!)
4) And HELLO, what the hell do these people mean by SYLLABUS?
How long in our academic lives are we gonna have feelings (and rightly so) for studying what is there in the syllabus, and not touch the things that "are" out of syllabus?!
When will the educational bosses in India going to realize that the educational system we've got here really needs a drastic change, by adding more practical aspects to what we study, rather than trying to make BOOKWORMS win the battle of marks and get to be known as scholars (mostly when this isn't the case?).
5) This comes from me, not because my ego (or anything for that matter) hurt when people beat me at scoring marks in written exams, but because, the people have to understand that RATTOFYING isn't going to take anyone anywhere!
The creative mind of the person stops functioning, right from 1st standard!
6) I strictly don't judge people from the marks they score; God, who cares what they score in gritty written exams? Also, I hate those who do judge people on their scorecard.
And speaking of practical exams here, people can rattofy even these! The apparatus, procedures, and results! So they aren't practical then, are they? Practicals are supposed to be aiming at trying to give students the connection between the theory they learn in classes and what it actually means in nature! But here, they teach us practicals as if we are learning another "theory", only that we have to physically test it, not UNDERSTAND or LEARN it!
7) The entrance tests are used to judge people for admissions to higher education. Then why the hell do these people want us to matriculate in 12th standard? Either- (a) scrap the entrance exams and judge people on matriculation OR (b) after standard 10, give them 2 years compulsory "off" to peacefully study at home for the entrance tests! Won't that release tension? I bet, they will!
8) I've researched a bit on better educational policies; I've found better of them, in that case!
In some of those "better" ones, they have practical approach to everything, and exams are only practical, with understanding of everything necessary to answer practical questions on those subjects. Thinking of the word "practical" overused? Well, it isn't actually, 'coz that's how it should well be!
9) Importance of practical approach:
a) How far do you go mugging up things?- Topping in kindergarten? Topping in high school? Merit list in 10th std.? Merit list in 12th std.? Topping in entrance exams? First class with distinction in every semester/year of your degree Major? Mebbe earning some scholarships due to your mugged-up scorecards? WHAT NEXT? NOTHING, I say!
b) In your profession (job)- as a doctor of medicine, will you mug up what medicines to prescribe for what illness? As an engineer, are you going to mug up what is required for what device everytime?
An ideal educational system consists of-
a) Up-to-date course (and not 1960 stuff under the name of "the-student-needs-to-know-the-basics"!)
b) Introduce practice of practicals! (Scrap homework/assignments/gritty completions as more than 90% of sane people copy them from the nerdies of the class!)
c) Judge students on the basis of what they comprehend, rather than what they show of knowing! Marks can be a part of this judging!
d) Introduce field-trips for showing students practical applications of what they study, if these applications can't be brought to school/college labs.
I'm 100% confident that the country which implements this method of spreading education, will be on the top, and no one can stop it!
For that matter, I can't see India going anywhere at the moment!
